This is a curated guide to sleeping cheaply across the whole of Noord-Holland — not just Amsterdam. We cover the canal belt and Jordaan, but also Haarlem's Grote Markt, Zaandam's green wooden houses, the cheese-market town of Alkmaar, the North Sea beaches at Zandvoort and Bergen aan Zee, the Wadden island of Texel, and the working port of Den Helder. Each area gets its own page with real price bands, the neighbourhoods that actually make sense for visitors, and which train from Amsterdam Centraal gets you there.

Amsterdam is the obvious base but not always the cheapest. Inside the city, the Jordaan and canal ring cost $180-260 a night for a decent double, De Pijp and Oud-West run $140-200, and Amsterdam-Noord (a free ferry from Centraal) drops to $110-160 with more character than the price suggests. Near Sloterdijk and Zuidoost you can find chain hotels for $85-120, though you trade atmosphere for the metro map.

Before you book

Off-peak, you can find double rooms in the province from around $55 to $85 a night. The cheapest bases are Zaandam (a 12-minute train ride from Amsterdam Centraal) and Haarlem, where budget properties like the Ibis Amsterdam Zaandam or easyHotel Amsterdam Zaandam frequently list rooms under $70 in November through February, outside tulip season and major events.
For the cheapest prices, come in November, January or February — hotel rates drop 30-40% and you can find Amsterdam rooms for $90 rather than $180. Peak is late April (tulip season at Keukenhof), King's Day on 27 April, and July-August. Shoulder months May and September balance decent weather with rooms around $120-140.
For a first visit, base yourself in Amsterdam's Jordaan or De Pijp for canals and cafes ($140-220 a night). Haarlem suits travellers who want a smaller historic centre with easy 15-minute trains to Amsterdam ($90-130). For beach and dunes, Zandvoort or Bergen aan Zee work well in summer, with guesthouses from $100.
You do not need a car. NS trains link Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem (15 min, $5), Alkmaar (35 min, $9), Zaandam (12 min, $4) and Den Helder (75 min, $17). Buses from Connexxion reach the smaller villages and beaches. For Texel island, take the train to Den Helder then the TESO ferry ($3.50 foot passenger, 20 min).
Two dates blow up hotel prices across Noord-Holland: King's Day (27 April) and the Keukenhof tulip bloom (roughly 20 March to 10 May). Amsterdam rooms triple to $400-600 on 26-27 April and Lisse-area hotels sell out months ahead. Book by January or shift your trip to early March or late May for normal rates.
